These are the words on a broker’s listing in India. Tamil Nadu words sit next to words from other states. Where a unit changes by district, this page says so instead of printing one false constant.
One hundredth of an acre. 1 cent = 435.6 sq ft = 48.4 sq yards. This is the usual plot unit in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Convert it with the land unit converter.
A Tamil Nadu market word, especially in Chennai. 1 ground = 2,400 sq ft, about 5.5 cent. Sale deeds often still use sq ft. If the seller’s “ground” and the deed disagree, quote the deed and show the sq ft.
Used in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. 1 gunta = 1,089 sq ft = 121 sq yards, which is one fortieth of an acre. Forty guntas make an acre. Some villages use a local variant. Read the document if the number looks round and unofficial.
1 acre = 43,560 sq ft = 4,840 sq yards. 1 sq yard = 9 sq ft. These are the figures the converter uses. They do not change by state.
Not one Indian unit. In much of Assam and West Bengal a bigha is often 14,400 sq ft. In parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar a pucca bigha is often quoted near 27,225 sq ft. Rajasthan and Gujarat use other local bighas. Estavik’s converter does not offer a single bigha button. See the land units article.
அங்கணம். An older Tamil measure still heard in some districts. It is not the same sq ft figure on every deed. Do not convert it from memory. Read the number written on the document, then enter sq ft or cent in the listing.
வீட்டு மனை. Tanglish for a house site, a residential plot, as opposed to wet agricultural land. A 3 cent veettu thidal is a house site of 3 cent, not a farm.
In Tamil Nadu, the revenue record of who holds the land. Other states use other names for the equivalent extract, such as a pahani or a 7/12. A broker can note “patta to be checked” on a private field. Checking the record is not the same as promising title. A small advance a buyer pays to hold a conversation. It is not a registered agreement and it is not possession. Write the amount and the date in your own note. Do not describe a token as a completed sale.
